- Coordinator/Adviser of Recreation Clubs - Campus Recreation
In anticipation of opening a new student recreation center
in the Winter of 2010, Portland State University is seeking
an experienced professional for its Coordinator/Adviser
of Rec Clubs. An Urban Thirteen university, Portland State
is located in Portland, Oregon, one of the nation's most
livable cities. Known as a leader in community engagement
and sustainability, Portland State enrolls over 25,000 students
with approximately 1800 students living in on-campus housing.
Reporting
to the Assistant Director, Programs in Campus Recreation,
the Coordinator/Adviser will provide leadership, vision,
and strong strategic direction/supervision for the Rec Clubs
Program. This position advises and monitors the student
recreational organizations of PSU to provide accurate and
appropriate information about working within a state agency;
ensures that students follow all administrative rules, policies
and procedures and the clubs represent the interests of
all students at PSU. This position advises over 30 student
organizations and their events, six part-time coaches, one
GA and one undergrad para-professional, administers the
Rec Club Council, supports Campus Rec activities and other
general student affairs events.
Duties
and Responsibilities
General
:
- Advise and support student
organizations and programs in coordination and collaboration
with other Campus Rec staff and other University departments.
- Communicate University
and departmental policy, procedures and information
to student organizations in a timely and effective manner.
- Assist student leaders
in acquiring organizational skills in areas such as
problem-solving, conflict-resolution, communication,
and program/event planning.
- Communicate, monitor
and provide support for student organizations to understand
and effectively use the accounting, budgeting, Student
Fee, and Rec Clubs Council budget allocation processes
- Plan, implement, and
promote training for students and student organizations
in leadership development, event planning, and management,
and team-building.
- Assist students in understanding
the University mission, structure, and resources available
to them.
- Work with student organizations
to promote accountability, effectiveness and efficiency.
- Provide fiscal and risk
management accountability for events.
- Supervise part-time coaches
- Participate in campus
programs which further the mission of Student Affairs
(e.g. Preview Day).
Specific
Duties:
- Oversee
and assist in management of Rec Clubs Council which
is responsible for the student organization fiscal allocation
process and policy development.
- Supervise
the Rec Clubs program during competitive events and
practices including weekends and evenings
- Assist
with pre and post game/tournament/event administration
- Hiring
and scheduling of Rec Clubs Safety Officers
- Ensure
student organizations understand state and university
policy for travel.
- Coordinate
roster administration for rec club teams, ensuring all
required paperwork is completed and tracked.
- Daily
interaction with club officers and members
- Coordination
and contractual payment for officials and part-time
coaches of club sports
- Assist
with Sport, Rec and Wellness Week, Party in the Park,
and other special events
- Supervise
the distribution and collection of club equipment
- Ensure
rec clubs website is current
- Coordinate
Club volunteers to staff Rec Clubs office
- Update
schedules and materials for rec clubs program
- Assist
with deposits for the program/department
- Provide
some evening facility management support for clubs and
intramurals
Minimum
Qualifications
-
Bachelor's Degree plus three years experience or Master's
plus one year experience (GA in relevant position can
count for the year).

Experience
working with diverse college students in a university
or college environment.
-
Experience in managing, advising, or coordinating student
leaders.

Scheduling
flexibility to meet student organization needs.
-
Must
successfully pass a criminal background check.
-
Master's
Degree and three years experience working in a college
or university environment.
-
Training
or experience in leadership development, program planning
and evaluation.

Understanding
of student learning and assessment;
-
Engagement with relevant professional associations.
-
Ability
to work effectively as a team.
-
Strong
problem-solving skills in the context of interpersonal
and group relations, strong analytical skills, and strong
oral and communication skills.
Compensation
The
starting annual salary rate for this position will be between
$37,890 and $42,500, dependent upon qualifications and experience,
with an excellent benefits package including fully paid
healthcare; a generous retirement and vacation package;
and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse, or dependant
at any of the Oregon University System schools.
