REC-003 - Coordinator of Aquatics and Safety - Campus Recreation

In anticipation of opening a new student recreation center in the Winter of 2010, Portland State University is seeking an experienced professional for its Coordinator of Aquatics and Safety. An Urban Thirteen university located in downtown Portland, Oregon, Portland State is known as a leader in community engagement. Portland State enrolls over 25,000 students with over 1800 students living in on-campus housing.

Primary Responsibilities

  • The creation, implementation, supervision, and promotion of organized and informal aquatics programs
  • The implementation of a comprehensive safety training program for Campus Rec employees and other University departments.

Additional Responsibilities include

  • Supervision of part-time employees, teaching or coordinating classes and programs, guarding, pool maintenance needs as necessary, and training of rec clubs safety officers.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and three years full-time experience or a Master's Degree and one year relevant experience (a Graduate Assistantship in aquatics can count);
  • Must possess and maintain a valid certificate and authorization as an American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor (or equivalent);
  • Must hold or acquire within the six months year of being hired the Water Safety Instructor Trainer certificate needed for this position;
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary;
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification as Water Safety Instructor;
  • Certification as Professional Rescuer;
  • Experience with implementing holistic safety programs;
  • Skills in dealing with collegiate recreation events and large-scale university special events;
  • Working knowledge of a university environment to include interaction with residential life;
  • Demonstrated skill and experience managing swimming pool operations to include mechanical, chemical and state code regulations;
  • Demonstrated skill in supervision of a moderate (20+) part time employee work group;
  • Communication and interpersonal skills to relate to diverse campus groups, colleagues and the university community inclusive of children, young adults, and seniors;
  • Demonstrated skill in aquatic programming for a diverse campus community with varied interests; Understanding of student learning and assessment;
  • Engagement with relevant professional associations.

Compensation

The starting annual salary rate for this position will be between $37,890 and $40,000, dependent upon qualifications and experience, with an excellent benefits package including fully paid healthcare; a generous retirement and vacation package; and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse, or dependant at any of the Oregon University System schools.

 

Duration: July 15, 2008 through June 30, 2009 - Renewable
