Position Summary

Portland State (physics.pdx.edu) invites applications for a professor in the Department of Physics to begin September 2008. Candidates at the associate or full professor level are encouraged to apply. Qualified applicants will possess an active and externally-funded research programs in experimental or theoretical biophysics. The successful applicant will join a growing department with 12 tenure-track faculty, approximately 30 graduate students (M.S. and Ph.D.) and 60 undergraduate students. The Department of Physics is in the midst of a major rebuilding, part of a university-wide commitment to increase the research capability in the sciences and engineering.

The research programs in the Physics Department are built around the broad themes of biological, environmental, and materials physics (nanotechnology) and we are especially interested in candidates with established programs at the interface between Biophysics and Nanotechnology. Further, it is anticipated that the person filling this position will contribute substantively to the upper division and graduate level physics curriculum, and therefore should have research and teaching experience suitable to this role.

Faculty are engaged in many collaborative efforts, both in research and in teaching, with other departments such as Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Biology. The university supports a number of interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs, and new Centers for Electron Microscopy and Nanofabrication, Genomics, and Life in Extreme Environments have been formed in the last several years. In addition to interactions within the university, many collaborations exist with faculty from the Oregon Health and Sciences University/Oregon Graduate Institute (OHSU/OGI), and more ambitious formal plans linking the Portland research institutions are being contemplated.

In addition the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute (ONAMI) is a regional source of collaborative opportunities that connects Oregon's three public research universities - Oregon State University, Portland State University, and the University of Oregon, as well as the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (Richland, WA), the state of Oregon, selected researchers from OGI and OHSU, and the world-leading "Silicon Forest" high technology industry cluster of Oregon and southwest Washington. PSU is the lead institution for the nanometrology and nanoelectronics initiative within ONAMI.
