OIA-003 - Faculty-Led Programs Coordinator - Education Abroad - Office of International Affairs - Fixed-Term

 

This is a fixed-term 1.0 FTE 12-month academic professional position effective May 1, 2008 and ending on June 30, 2009 and may be renewed.

 

Institutional Setting

The Education Abroad office is charged with administering study abroad programs, internship programs, and exchanges as well as programs and services for international students, scholars, and faculty. Portland State University currently enrolls about 1,400 international students, hosts about 150 international faculty and scholars each year, and sends about 300 students abroad each year on approximately 100 PSU-sponsored programs. Education Abroad is located within the Office of International Affairs, a centralized international education unit.

 

Portland State University is a comprehensive public university enrolling more than 24,000 students. Located in downtown Portland, the University enjoys access to excellent cultural facilities, parks, and public transportation. Commercial and governmental centers, as well as cultural and entertainment resources, are within easy walking distance of campus.

 

The Faculty-Led Programs Coordinator is responsible for the management, recruitment, and development of faculty-led short-term study abroad programs. This position is also responsible for selected administrative and organizational tasks in support of PSU education abroad programs. In addition, this position will work with the Assistant Vice Provost of International Affairs in the development of new study abroad opportunities that meet the vision and goals of the institution.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • This position reports to the Assistant Vice Provost for International Affairs;
  • Serve as liaison to PSU departments and faculty who lead departmental and institutional short-term overseas programs;
  • Develop, coordinate and manage new and existing short-term faculty-led programs, to include program budgeting and monitoring, marketing and application;
  • Oversee recruitment and program promotion;
  • Serve as liaison to the International Council to develop a system that effectively vets all program proposals and evaluations;
  • Plan and implement faculty training workshops to assist faculty with new overseas program development and management;
  • Provide pre-departure orientations for short-term programs as well as coordinate evaluations of completed programs;
  • Expand the current handbook for developing short-term programs and keep it up-to-date;
  • Coordinate with other Education Abroad staff with respect to student applications, program reimbursements and reconciliation;
  • Coordinate financial aid procedures for study abroad students, including the preparation of financial aid budgets and student billing;
  • Work with academic departments with regard to granting study abroad credits; advise students on this process;
  • Recruit, interview, advise, and place students in a variety of education abroad opportunities;
  • On occasion this position must be available after the normal work day, and on weekends;
  • This position requires occasional international travel;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice Provost for International Affairs.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters' degree, preferably with an international focus
  • Study, employment, travel or residence abroad
  • Minimum of two years working with programming in a higher education setting
  • Experience with short-term faculty-led programming in a higher education setting
  • Ability to relate well to diverse students, faculty, and staff, especially in a team setting
  • Demonstrated ability to write well
  • Proficient with MS Office software (Word, Access, Publisher, Excel)
  • Strong organizational skills and accuracy in record keeping
  • Must be able to successfully complete a background check
  • Must be able to work occasional weekends and evenings
  • Must be able to occasionally travel abroad

Compensation

The starting annual salary rate is $40,000, with an excellent benefits packages including fully paid healthcare; a generous retirement and vacation package; and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse or dependant at any of the Oregon University System schools.
