EDU-009 - Assistant Professor - Bilingual/ESL Teacher Education and School-University Partnerships - Curriculum & Instruction - Graduate School of Education

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction invites applications and nominations for a tenure-track position for an Assistant Professor in bilingual/bicultural teacher education and/or English as a Second Language teacher education and school-university partnerships.

Background

The Portland metropolitan area is a vibrant and growing bi-state community with a culturally diverse population of about 1.2 million people. Portland State University is an urban university with a motto of “Let knowledge serve the city.” Portland State has an enrollment of 15,000 students and has grown steadily over the last 10 years so that it is now the largest university in Oregon . The university is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty so that our students and communities can benefit from multiple ethnic and gender perspectives. As a major institution for teacher education located in Oregon 's largest urban center, the PSU Graduate School of Education is in a unique position to take leadership and have an impact on school change in the area. We work in consultation with preservice and inservice teachers on the implementation and evaluation of school renewal agendas. We focus on preparing our students to work in our increasingly diverse communities.

The Graduate School of Education has three academic departments: Curriculum and Instruction, Special Education and Counselor Education, and Educational Leadership. In addition to bilingual/bicultural teacher education and/or English as a Second Language teacher education and school-university partnerships, this position also requires strength in leadership of school reform efforts through school-university partnerships focused on improving the educational experience for our bilingual, bicultural students and their families. The Department of Curriculum and Instruction has 20 tenure-track faculty, who each year prepare six cohorts of students to become teachers. In addition, the department has an active master's degree program for practicing teachers and participates in a school-wide doctoral program. Following our commitment to educational equity, for the last eight years we have collaborated with 15 school districts to institute a teacher licensure program for bilingual, bicultural paraprofessionals, the Bilingual Teacher Pathway program.
