Portland
State University in located in downtown Portland, the major
urban center of Oregon. The University is centered on the
tree-lined South Park Blocks, an extensive greenway through
the center of town, and is surrounded by numerous cafes, pubs,
and restaurants. PSU's Portland Business Accelerator is located
near the south side of campus, part of an emerging biotechnology
research cluster centered in the new South Waterfront Development.
Adjacent to the University is the Portland cultural district,
home to the Portland Symphony, the Portland Center for the
Performing Arts, the Portland Art Museum, and the Northwest
Film Center. The variety of outdoor activities convenient
to the city is unsurpassed. Hiking, mountain biking, skiing,
windsurfing, and kayaking are popular outdoor activities accessible
within minutes of Portland. The rugged Cascade and Coast
mountain ranges provide hundreds of miles of trails.
Department
Summary
The
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Portland
State University, established in 1982, offers bachelor's,
master's, and PhD degrees. The department's facilities are
located on the PSU campus in downtown Portland, Oregon.
The department's strong ties with local industry allow graduate
students to interact with practicing engineers in the classroom
and laboratory. Over the past three years, the department
has graduated 161 master's and doctoral students.
The
local chapters of the IEEE and of several honor societies
are very active in departmental and university affairs. The
Graduate Students in this Electrical Engineering organization
maintain a departmental research library and provide a forum
for discussing issues of interest.
Portland
State University is in the midst of a transformation from
a local, educational institution to a first-class research
university. The Department of Electrical Engineering is a
leader in this transformation.
Position
Summary
Portland State University invites applications for
an Assistant Professor in Electrical & Computer Engineering,
commencing fall 2008.
This
is a shared position between ECE and PSU's award winning general
education program, University Studies, with ECE being a home
department. In addition to strong research interest, the successful
candidate will possess a commitment to general education,
an interest in interdisciplinary work, the ability to function
as part of a team, and demonstrated excellence as a researcher
and as a teacher. An earned doctorate with a proven research
record in electrical or computer engineering is required,
as demonstrated by archival publications. A high priority
is placed on the potential for collaboration with existing
research areas and for building a sustainable, funded research
program. Areas of interest include computer architecture,
sustainability, low-power, alternative energy resources and
nano/bio technologies. Further information on our activities

In
addition to opportunities for interactions within the university,
collaborations within the region and the metropolitan area
are encouraged. Several collaborative structures already exist,
such as Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute
(ONAMI), which is a regional collaboration that connects Oregon
's three public research universities - Oregon State University, Portland State University, and the University of Oregon
- with the Oregon Graduate Institute (OGI), Oregon Health
& Science University (OHSU) and the state of Oregon.
Additional collaborations exist with the Applied Physics Laboratory
at the University of Washington, the Pacific Northwest National
Laboratory (Richland/Sequim Washington) and numerous area
industries present in Portland 's high technology industry
cluster, or “ Silicon Forest ".
Qualifications
An
earned doctorate with a proven research record in electrical
or computer engineering is required, as demonstrated by archival
publications. An interest in undergraduate teaching and general
education demonstrated by a teaching record and engagement
activities is expected.
