CEN-005 - Research Associate - Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering - Fixed-Term

Position Summary

The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering in the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science at Portland State University invites applications for a Research Associate in Transportation Engineering to begin in fall 2006. The successful candidate will participate in the activities and expansion of the Intelligent Transportation Systems Laboratory ( www.its.pdx.edu ) and support the research requirements of current and future projects.

The PSU Intelligent Transportation Systems Lab studies how Intelligent Transportation Systems can improve transportation efficiency and safety throughout the Portland metropolitan region, the state of Oregon and the nation. The Lab partners with local, regional, national and international collaborators on a variety of innovative projects. The ITS Lab will play a key role in the new University Transportation Center at PSU ( www.cts.pdx.edu ).

The main project during this appointment is an evaluation of the Oregon Department of Transportation's new system-wide adaptive ramp metering system, including development of new methods for extracting traffic flow parameters from the Portland Transportation Archive Listing (PORTAL). Research tasks will include programming and modeling, developing technical reports, journal and conference papers, and presentations of research results. Activities also include development of new research proposals, project management under direction of principal investigator, participation in ITS Lab events, and directing graduate and undergraduate student researchers. Secondary responsibilities may include teaching and guest lecturing.

Minimum Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering with a demonstrated record in the area of transportation engineering with a focus on traffic operations and control
  • B.S. and M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering (transportation)
  • strong quantitative, computer programming, teaching and communication skills
  • experience at a university with an existing University Transportation Center
  • published papers and reports and professional presentations
  • a strong team work ethic
