ART-003 - ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF GRAPHIC DESIGN & INTERACTIVE DESIGN – DEPARTMENT OF ART – TENURE TRACK

Position Summary

The School of Fine and Performing Arts and the Department of Art at Portland State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in the area of Graphic Design/Interactive Design.

 

Responsibilities would involve: Teaching seven courses (28 credits) per year as determined by department chair at lower and upper division undergraduate levels; work with graphic design faculty on curricular and program development; student advising; departmental and university service, and community outreach. In addition, professional activities of a scholarly and creative nature are expected as well as a willingness to actively pursue grant opportunities.

The position is a full-time, 1.0 FTE, tenure track, nine month position that begins September 16, 2008. This position would report directly to the Department Chair. Salary would be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Qualifications 

•  MFA, MA or equivalent terminal degree in Graphic Design or related field is required.

•  Strong professional accomplishments in the area of web design and interactive media will be required.

•  All candidates must demonstrate design and teaching methodologies that are strong in creative process, research skills, design theory, creative thinking, and innovative and strategic problem solving in the area of digital media, graphic design and web design.

•  Successful candidates will candidate to have a strong graphic design background that combines theoretical and practical knowledge in typography, web, and interactive design.

•  Candidates must also have the ability to teach lower and upper division digital media courses that address both design and software skills. Teaching experience and strong professional accomplishments in digital and web design and interactive media is required.

•  Applicants should provide evidence of scholarly productivity and teaching effectiveness, as well as demonstrate knowledge of digital/ multimedia applications via an electronic portfolio.

•  Preference will be given to candidates with teaching experience at university/college level and an MFA or equivalent terminal degree in graphic design or related field.

•  In alignment with the university's mission, preference will be given to candidates with an interest or experience in community-based education and civic engagement.

•  A background in grant writing is highly desired but not required.

The Department of Art

The department offers a BA degree in Art History, BA & BS degrees in Drawing/Painting/Printmaking, Graphic Design, and Sculpture. There are 14 full-time faculty and approximately 60 part-time faculty, 900 declared majors and many non-majors from other academic areas and the community. The department is dedicating to the evolving nature of the arts and the artist. We support this evolution in faculty scholarship, faculty development and evolving curriculum and programs. The School of Fine and Performing Arts incorporates the Departments of Architecture, Art, Music and Theater Arts.
