- ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF GRAPHIC DESIGN & VISUAL COMMUNICATION

The
urban university in the Oregon State System of Higher Education,
Portland State University has an established enrollment
of 24,000 students. Located in the center of a vigorous
and beautiful city, the University shares its goals and
talents with the metropolitan area from which it draws the
majority of its students.
THE
DEPARTMENT OF ART
The
department offers a BA degree in Art History, BA & BS
degrees in Drawing/Painting/Printmaking, Graphic Design,
and Sculpture. There are 14 full-time faculty and approximately
60 part-time faculty, 900 declared majors and many non-majors
from other academic areas and the community. The department
is dedicating to the evolving nature of the arts and the
artist. We support this evolution in faculty scholarship,
faculty development and evolving curriculum and programs.
The School of Fine and Performing Arts incorporates the
Departments of Architecture, Art, Music and Theater Arts.
POSITION
SUMMARY
The
School of Fine and Performing Arts and the Department of
Art at Portland State University invites applications for
an Assistant Professor position in the area of Graphic Design/Visual
Communication. Responsibilities would involve: Teaching
seven courses (28 credits) per year as determined by department
chair at lower and upper division undergraduate levels;
work with graphic design faculty on curricular and program
development; student advising; departmental and university
service, and community outreach. In addition, professional
activities of a scholarly and creative nature are expected
as well as a willingness to actively pursue grant opportunities.
The
position is a full-time, 1.0 FTE, tenure track, nine month
position that begins September 16, 2008. This position would
report directly to the Department Chair. Salary would be
commensurate with experience and qualifications; and includes
an excellent benefits package including fully paid healthcare,
reduced tuition rates, and a generous retirement and vacation
package.
QUALIFICATIONS
-
MFA
or equivalent terminal degree in Graphic Design / Visual
Communication or closely related field is required.

Strong
professional accomplishments in the area of graphic design
will be required.

All candidates must have current and expansive knowledge
of the field including typography, conceptual problem
solving and graphic design theory, research, history and
practice.

Successful candidates will support graphic design practice
that is socially engaged, that promotes human-centered,
collaborative and multidisciplinary approaches, and that
engages with diverse audiences across the commercial and
creative sectors.

Applicants must be able to teach at all levels of a comprehensive
graphic design program. The graphic design program at
Portland State University includes areas of study in information
design, typography, identity systems and branding, publication
design, package design, design history, design theory
and research, web design, interactive media and time-based
media. A successful candidate will have the ability to
teach in a minimum of five of these areas.

Candidates must also be proficient in the variety of technologies
and software pertinent to graphic design and be able to
teach foundation through upper division digital media
courses.

Applicants should provide evidence of their professional
and scholarly accomplishments by providing a sufficient
number of examples of their own work and a body of student
work that demonstrates their ability to teach graphic
design courses at all levels.

Preference will be given to those who have taught at university/college
level beyond teaching assistantship.

In alignment with the university's mission, preference
will be given to candidates with an interest or experience
in community-based education and civic engagement.

A background in grant writing is highly desired but not
required.
